Abstract:

With over two decades of active involvement in experimental particle physics, particularly through the CMS experiment at CERN, the School of Particles and Accelerators is pleased to present the 5th IPM Workshop on Experimental Particle Physics. This one-day event will provide an in-depth introduction to the core concepts, methods, and tools used in experimental particle physics.

The workshop is designed to engage graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and faculty members in exploring the various areas of this dynamic field. Attendees will have the opportunity to gain valuable insights into the latest developments and applications in particle physics research.

This year's workshop will focus on the following topics:

Abstract:

I present a quantitative study of how future Electron–Ion Collider (EIC) semi-inclusive DIS (SIDIS) measurements can improve the determination of parton-to-pion fragmentation functions. Using an NLO pQCD framework with a neural-network parametrization and Monte Carlo uncertainty propagation, we perform two global fits: (i) existing SIA and SIDIS data (HERMES and COMPASS), and (ii) the same dataset augmented by EIC SIDIS pseudo-data at. The pseudo-data are generated consistently within the same NLO collinear-factorization framework, with realistic statistical and correlated systematic uncertainties. We find that including EIC pseudo-data leads to a substantial reduction of fragmentation-function uncertainties, most notably at medium-to-large z, with particularly strong gains for selected light-quark channels and a clear improvement for the gluon fragmentation function.

Abstract:

The top quark, as the heaviest known elementary particle, occupies a unique position in the Standard Model and plays a central role in probing fundamental interactions at the electroweak scale. Owing to its extremely short lifetime, the top quark decays before hadronization, allowing its spin information and correlation patterns to be directly transferred to its decay products. This feature makes top-antitop systems an exceptional laboratory for investigating quantum correlations in high-energy processes. In this talk, I explore what quantum correlations can reveal about the underlying physics of top quarks. I discuss how these correlations emerge in top-quark pair production, and how they can be quantified using tools from quantum information theory. I also highlight recent theoretical and experimental advances in accessing quantum correlations at collider experiments, especially at the LHC.

Inflation is the leading paradigm for the dynamics of the early Universe and for the generation of large scale structures in the cosmos. In this talk, we review early universe cosmology and inflationary model buildings and their connections to osmological observations. We also briefly review our recent works on quantum loop corrections in the primordial power spectrum.

Abstract:

Kinetic plasma simulations, such as the Electromagnetic Particle-in-Cell (EMPIC) method, are essential for studying complex phenomena in high-power microwave devices, particle accelerators, and astrophysical plasmas. However, these simulations are computationally expensive due to the large number of particles required for accurate phase-space sampling. In this talk, based on the paper, I will present a novel data-driven reduced-order modeling framework based on Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) to accelerate EMPIC simulations by modeling the space-charge dynamics through the time evolution of plasma current density. The proposed DMD-EMPIC algorithm replaces the computationally intensive particle operations (gather, pusher, scatter) with a low-dimensional DMD model during the post-transient phase, achieving significant speed-ups while maintaining high accuracy. The effectiveness of this approach through several case studies, including oscillating electron beams, virtual cathode oscillations, and backward wave oscillators will be demonstrated.

Abstract:

The associated production of top-quark pairs with a W boson (tt̄W) is a rare Standard Model process that serves as a crucial probe for electroweak interactions, top-quark couplings, and potential new physics contributions, while also posing challenges for Monte Carlo modeling due to its complexity. In this analysis, the ATLAS Collaboration presents the first detailed differential cross sections measurement of tt̄W using the full Run-2 dataset (140 fb⁻¹ at √s = 13 TeV). The measurement targets leptonic final states with two same-sign or three isolated leptons (electrons or muons), employing advanced machine-learning techniques for heavy-flavor tagging and background rejection. The inclusive cross section is extracted via a binned maximum-likelihood fit, yielding: σ(tt̄W) = 880 ± 80 fb — about 1.8σ above the state-of-the-art NLO QCD prediction of 745 ± 82 fb, highlighting possible tensions in scale choices or higher-order effects. Differential distributions in lepton multiplicities, jet kinematics, and angular variables are unfolded to particle level and compared, revealing generally good agreement in normalized shapes. Additionally, the relative charge asymmetry: A_C(rel) = 0.33 ± 0.05 is measured, aligning well with theory (0.322 ± 0.008). The presentation will discuss analysis challenges.

Abstract:

Superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) have emerged as the leading technology for ultra-fast, ultra-low-noise photon detection, offering performance that surpasses conventional photomultiplier tubes and semiconductor photodetectors by orders of magnitude. In this talk, I will introduce the physics of superconducting materials, the microscopic detection mechanism in nanowires, and the device structures that enable >90% efficiency, sub-20-ps timing jitter, and true photon-number resolution. Focusing on applications relevant to particle and accelerator physics, I will show how the unique characteristics of SNSPDs address longstanding limitations in timing, background suppression, low-light detection, and precision photon diagnostics. Emerging advances in large-area arrays, cryogenic readout, and integration with quantum technologies will also be discussed. This talk aims to provide a clear and accessible introduction to the technology and highlight new opportunities for its use in high-energy physics and accelerator-based experiments.
